Our Story

6th Boro Hoops is a youth basketball academy based in New York City with a vast network of players, coaches, and partners in the U.S.,  Canada and Europe. Our organization was founded in 2015 with one goal in mind: to bring back fundamental education in youth basketball development.

Mission and Values

We strive to build and elite basketball academy where players:

  • Evolve in a POSITIVE coaching environment focused on life lessons
  • Are challenged mentally to UNDERSTAND the game and READ situations

Every day, we work very hard to develop strategies and opportunities for our athletes while promoting our 4 core values:

  1. Fun
  2. Mastery
  3. Discipline
  4. Resilience

Rising Stars Youth Foundation

As leaders in youth sports development, our first and most important job is to leverage our position and proximity to children in order to provide them with teachings and opportunities that extend far beyond the hardwood. That is why we have partnered with the Rising Stars Youth Foundation and are delighted to share their programs with our athletes.

Established in 1996, the Rising Stars Youth Foundation’s mission is to utilize the game of basketball as the vehicle to promote education, reinforce values, and provide our youth with a safe environment to PLAY, LEARN, and GROW. From classroom tutoring sessions to outreach programs, high school scholarships, and college advisory sessions, Rising Stars allows us to truly impact athletes in a meaningful way.

Our partnership with Rising Stars is a fundamental part of our daily work and we are extremely excited about upcoming opportunities.

“Rising Stars teaches so much more than the game of basketball. It teaches about life, and gives its students the tools they need to succeed in it. I will always be grateful for what Rising Stars has done for me and the difference it made in my life. I am honored to continue working with Rising Stars and to support their ongoing efforts.”

Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA)

Thanks to the diversified background and extensive experience of the 6th Boro team, we have come to the conclusion that there has been a serious wrong turn in recent years within the American youth basketball community. Coaching basketball has become nothing more than a branding competition; sacrificing detailed and disciplined education for short-term goals and attention. Many seem to have forgotten the importance of life lessons learned through athletics and fail to understand that “winning” at a young age doesn’t necessarily translate into long-term mastery and personal development.

Luckily for us, we have found the perfect partner to help us navigate today’s shady coaching landscape. In January 2019, we have officially partnered with the Positive Coaching Alliance, who is striving to transform the youth sports culture into a Development Zone® where all youth and high school athletes have a positive, character-building experience that results in better athletes, better people.

The Positive Coaching Alliance will provide us with educational resources, consulting, and live workshops to help guide our coaches, parents, and athletes towards a positive culture.

“In a positive youth sports culture, all resources do not flow to the elite level. Athletes have options determined by their ability and interest. Elite athletes compete in “meritocratic” environments in which a place on the team and playing time are determined by ability, performance and effort. Less talented or skilled athletes, or simply athletes who want a different kind of experience, have the option to play in developmental or recreational programs in which they are guaranteed the right to play at least a part of every game.

At every level, players are proud to have their families and friends see them play. Knowing that they are an important part of the team contributes to this proud feeling; their coaches are supportive and do not embarrass them in front of those watching; they are confident that their parents are supportive and will not confront the officials over questionable calls; and ultimately, they know that those watching are proud of them whether or not they win the game.”

Our Team

Our founder, Nihad Musovic, leveraged our team’s international background and extensive basketball experience to travel the globe to learn from some of the best teachers in Europe, Canada, and here in the U.S.. Over the years, we have built a strong network of basketball and sports performance professionals who help us improve on our philosophies every single day.

Our team is composed of former HS, college, and professional players, HS and college coaches, performance coaches, as well as other sports-related professionals such as psychologists and athletic trainers.

All 6th Boro coaches are required to be Double-Goal coaches, a concept coined by the Positive Coaching Alliance, which we believe is primordial in developing the next generation of athletes. Double-Goal coaches use three main principles to prepare athletes to win on the scoreboard while teaching life lessons: The ELM Tree of Mastery, Filling Emotional Tanks, and Honoring the Game. To keep our coaches accountable, we require all of our team members to regularly read and be tested on positive coaching concepts and guidelines. We also mandate that all 6th Boro Hoops members attend at least one PCA workshop per year.
